Pin Mode
Route dictation to one selected Windows target while you work in another window.
Enable Pin Mode
Pin Mode sends dictation to one selected Windows window or text field while you work elsewhere. It is labeled experimental. Its shortcut has no default binding, so the feature is inactive until you assign one.
- Open Experimental.
- Under Pin Mode, select Pin shortcut.
- Press the key combination you want to use.
- If Whisperstream reports a conflict, choose another combination.
For help choosing Clipboard or Keystroke for the destination, see Text insertion and compatibility.
Pin and clear a destination
- Open the destination app.
- Click the exact window or text field that should receive dictation.
- Press your Pin shortcut. The HUD briefly shows Pinned.
- Move to another window and dictate normally.
The pinned destination may briefly come to the foreground while text is sent. Whisperstream then tries to return you to the window you were using.
Press the Pin shortcut again to clear the pin. The HUD shows Unpinned, and later dictation goes to the currently focused destination.
| Pin state | Result |
|---|---|
| Not pinned | Text goes to the currently focused destination. |
| Pinned and available | Text goes to the window or field you selected. |
| Pinned target unavailable | Text is not redirected to another window. If a dictation is delivered in parts, earlier parts remain at the pinned destination, but the failed and remaining parts are not sent. The HUD shows Not sent, and Whisperstream may clear the pin. |
If Not sent appears, reopen the destination if needed and focus the intended field. Press the Pin shortcut. If the HUD shows Unpinned, press it once more. Dictate again only after the HUD shows Pinned.
Use Auto-submit
Turn on Auto-submit dictation under Experimental > Pin Mode when Enter should be pressed after text reaches the pinned destination.
Leave it off when you want to review or edit the result before sending it. Auto-submit applies only when the result is delivered in one insertion. It does not submit text delivered in several parts, and it does nothing when no pin is active or the destination shows Not sent.
Know how long a pin lasts
A pin lasts only for the current Whisperstream session. Quitting or restarting Whisperstream clears it.
Closing or restarting the destination app can also make the pin unavailable. Focus the new window or text field and create a new pin. Whisperstream does not restore the destination in a later session.
